Clear aligners have quickly become a beneficial alternative for traditional metal braces. However, unlike with metal braces, clear aligners must be cared for in a much different manner.
Here are some things to keep in mind, as well as helpful tips for properly caring for your clear aligners:
Clean your clear aligners regularly. Just as you are advised to brush and floss your teeth twice a day, the same thing must be done with your aligners as well. It is important to avoid harsh cleaners, and to only use the recommended products. Be sure to consult with your orthodontist in order to determine what the best option may be. Also keep in mind that it is not a good idea to use mouthwash on your aligners, especially since they can damage or tint them.
Keep your aligners in a safe place. Not only is it important to ensure that you are keeping them in a cool and dry place, but it is as equally important to store them in the appropriate container. In order to keep your aligners from getting lost, be sure to put them in a place where you will easily remember where you left them.
Avoid chewing gum while wearing your aligners. Just like with its traditional counterparts, chewing gum with clear aligners is a big no-no. Chewing gum can easily damage aligners, making them not effective in their treatment.
Avoid eating and drinking with aligners. Eating and drinking with your aligners in can cause bacteria and food to get trapped, which increases your risk of cavities and decay. Also, drinking hot liquids can cause aligners to distort, damaging them. Be sure to remove aligners while eating and drinking in order to avoid damage to your teeth, as well as your aligners.
