With August, many students are busy worrying about the start of a new school year. However, students who wear braces may also be worrying about how they will properly take care of their braces while at school.
Dr. Alamir and Beauty Smile Orthodontics wants to help make returning to school less stressful, but fun and easy with these helpful tips for caring for your braces at school:
Tip #1- Bring a bag for your braces. Designating a specific bag, specifically dedicated to caring for your braces and teeth, will allow you to better be able to find the essentials you will need for your braces, such as your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and rubber bands.
Tip #2-Avoid harmful foods. It may be difficult to refrain from eating the same things as your friends, especially when you are at school. However, it is critical that you continue to avoid chewy, sticky, and hard foods in order to prevent damage to your braces.
Tip #3- Brush your teeth. Just like during the summer months, it is important that you prevent any food and bacteria from sitting on your teeth all day long. That’s why it is a good idea to take the time after lunch to brush and floss your teeth, yes, even at school.
Tip #4- Wear a mouthguard when necessary. While it may not be necessary for everyone or every situation, but it is important to speak with your orthodontist in order to determine if it may be necessary for you to wear a mouthguard during gym class or while participating in any after school athletic programs.
Tip #5- Smile! Braces should not prevent you from wearing your smile at school. Be proud of your smile, showing it off often.
