Wearing braces may not be a picnic, often coming with some pain and discomfort, as well as some minor inconveniences. However, in order to make wearing braces a much more pleasant experience, Beauty Smile Orthodontics has some helpful tips for you:
Pain Relief
It is totally normal to experience some pain and discomfort in your teeth and mouth, especially when you first get your braces. In order to alleviate pain, try a saltwater gargle, dissolving one teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of lukewarm water, swishing for a couple of minutes. If pain persists, then try taking a pain reliever that has been suggested by your orthodontist.
Dental Wax
Be aware that it is perfectly normal for your lips, cheeks, or tongue to become irritated by your braces and/or wires. This typically subsides after those areas become more used to your braces, only happening during the first week or so. In the meantime, the use of dental wax will be helpful in preventing further irritation to your mouth.
Loose Teeth
Your teeth may begin to feel a bit loose. This is totally normal and happens because your teeth are being shifted into the correct position by your braces. Once they have been repositioned, they will no longer be loose. If this causes a painful sensation, then ask your orthodontist if you can use a pain reliever to help.
Loose Wires and Bands
The wires and bands on your braces may come loose, especially if you are not properly taking care of them. It is important that you contact your orthodontist immediately so they can make any repairs, if necessary.
Cleaning Your Braces
Keeping your smile clean can be difficult, especially when wearing braces. However, it is critical that you are cleaning your teeth regularly, especially after meals. This will prevent the build up of food, which can create cavities. In order to make cleaning with braces easier, patients should use a soft toothbrush, a waterpik, and special dental floss, which can all help to reach different areas around the mouth and braces.
