With August comes the beginning of another school year. While most students are busy worrying about the start of a new school year, some may also be worrying about how they will care for their braces.

Here are some helpful tips for caring for your braces while at school:

  • Have a “braces bag”. By designating a specific bag dedicated to caring for your braces and teeth, you will better be able to find things such as your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and rubber bands.
  • Make time to brush your teeth. It is important that you prevent any food and bacteria from sitting on your teeth all day long. That’s why it is a good idea to take the time after lunch to brush and floss your teeth.
  • Avoid food no-nos. It may be difficult to refrain from eating the same things as your friends, especially when you are at school. However, it is critical that you continue to avoid chewy, sticky, and hard foods in order to prevent damage to your braces.
  • Wear a mouthguard. While it may not be necessary for everyone or every situation, but it is important to speak with your orthodontist in order to determine if it may be necessary for you to wear a mouthguard during gym class or after school athletic programs.
  • Remember to smile! Braces should not prevent you from wearing your smile at school. Be proud and show off your smile!
