When preparing for getting your braces on, there may be other necessary steps that will have to be taken before you can do so. One of these steps may be the need for an extraction.

What Is An Extraction?

Extractions can be common before getting braces on, in kids and adults alike.  An extraction will help to create enough space for your teeth to shift, making the job of your braces more effective.

Do I Need An Extraction?

There is no yes or no answer when it comes to you needing an extraction. Actually, the only way to find out if you need one or not is to consult with your orthodontist, who will take x-rays, as well as refer you to a local oral surgeon.

There are certain cases in which an extraction may be necessary before your braces, including the following:

  • Your teeth have stopped growing. A lot of times, extractions are more common for adult orthodontic patients, especially since their teeth and bones have stopped growing and they need more room for their braces.
  • Your teeth are too crowded. There must be enough space in your jaws for your teeth to grow properly. If not, it is best to remove some of those teeth in order for braces to be effective.
  • You have an overbite. Extractions may be necessary to correct a severe overbite, which is often the best way, especially if you would like to avoid surgery to correct your overbite.
  • You have teeth that are missing or broken. Since your teeth will consistently be under pressure with the ongoing force that braces apply to your teeth, it important to ensure your teeth are in good shape, especially for the safety of your mouth.
