Braces are the main thing most people think of when they think about an orthodontist, however, there are other treatments that orthodontists specialize in. One of these other treatments include an appliance known as the palatal expander.

What Is A Palatal Expander?

A palatal expander is an extremely helpful orthodontic appliance that gently widens the jaw and roof of the mouth (palate). Due to this widening process, a number of narrow jaw issues can be treated and reduced, including bite issues.

Unlike braces, palatal expanders are most effective when they’re put to use before a child’s facial structure is fully developed, especially since as a child gets older, their growth plate will expand, completing its growth process around the age of 12.

How Does A Palatal Expander Work?

The expander attaches with metal brackets on both sides of the upper molars, and is composed of of two halves that are connected in the middle with a screw. With a slight turn of a key each day, tension is created, which widens the the expander, causing the surrounding bone to gradually expand, and new bone will then form to fill in the gap that is formed.

Palatal Expanders are typically worn for 3 to 6 months, removed once the desired result has been achieved, which is determined by your orthodontist. Palatal expanders are commonly used to treat the following:

  • Crossbites
  • Crowded & Impacted teeth
  • Breathing Issues

It is not likely that the use of a palatal expander will eliminate the need for braces, however, they can help shorten the length of treatment time when it comes to wearing braces.
