Keeping your retainer clean is perhaps one of the most important parts of maintaining your beautiful smile. Without the proper cleanings, your retainer will no longer be effective in helping your smile stay healthy and beautiful. Here are some tips to properly cleaning your retainer:

Clean using your toothpaste and toothbrush. Simply by using toothpaste and your toothbrush, you can effectively keep your retainer clean. However, if you choose to use the toothbrush and toothpaste method, be sure to avoid using a toothpaste with tartar control, which contains abrasive ingredients, and can scratch the surface of the retainer acrylic. Gently scrub your retainer thoroughly, on all sides for best results.

Clean using mouthwash. If you choose to use a mouthwash to clean your retainer, be sure to use one that is non-alcoholic, as alcohol can damage the acrylic on retainers. Also, be sure to choose one that is clear to avoid discoloration of the retainer. Be sure to soak your retainer in the mouthwash for an hour, removing it and gently scrubbing with a soft toothbrush.

Clean using distilled white vinegar. If you prefer to use a natural product, you can opt to use distilled white vinegar. Mix 1-part vinegar, to 3-parts water, in a cup, and soak your retainer in the mixture for about 15 minutes. Be sure to gently brush your retainer with a soft toothbrush upon removing it from the vinegar water solution.
