Many people are unaware that they grind their teeth; especially in their sleep. Teeth grinding is also known as bruxism and it is common in children. Though most children outgrow it at about the age of six, many do not.

Leaving bruxism untreated for a long time can cause many problems. For example, the constant grinding can cause the teeth to become fractured or loose and in some cases, the gums start to recede. It also weakens and increases the sensitivity of the teeth which can cause pain while eating. And over a long period of time, it can cause tightness in the face, headaches, and jaw aches.

It is important to visit your orthodontist if you notice your child grinding their teeth either while they are asleep or during waking hours. Treating it early will prevent your child from developing serious problems with their teeth along the line.

What Causes Teeth Grinding?

When a child grinds their teeth often, it is usually a sign of an underlying issue with the alignment of their teeth. Children with missing or severely crooked teeth are more likely to grind their teeth.

Teeth grinding has also been linked to ear or mouth infections. Some children start to unconsciously grind their teeth as a way to cope with the pain. Furthermore, children diagnosed with a form of jaw disorder are more prone to grinding their teeth.

Can Braces Be Used To Correct Teeth Grinding in Children?

Braces exist to correct the alignment of your teeth. If your teeth are properly aligned, the urge to grind them will reduce or even disappear. No matter the type of braces, the aim is to gradually and gently exert a consistent amount of pressure on the teeth which causes them to shift in the correct direction.

During the first few weeks of getting braces, the teeth grinding may seem to worsen. But with severe teeth grinding, it usually gets worse before it gets better. As the braces start to slowly correct the misalignment of the teeth, the grinding will reduce.

With braces, you have the option of getting traditional metal braces, clear braces, or Invisalign. Each type has its benefits and disadvantages. It is best to consult with your orthodontist to figure out which type is best for the needs of your child. A visit to the orthodontist will also help determine the cause of your child’s teeth grinding. The cause might affect the type of braces that will be recommended.

Once the braces are taken off, your child will have to wear a clear retainer for a while to ensure that the teeth stay in their correct position.
